Note | He was a Civil War veteran. At the age of 16, on 11th of September, 1862, he enrolled in Walker's Independent Mitilitia at Fannettsburg, Pa. In July, 1863 at the age of 17, at Mount Union, Pa. he enlisted in company E, 181st regiment, with a three year enlistment. However, in July, 1865 Company A, of the 181st was disbanded and Private Mort was honorably discharged from the service of United States on July 13, 1865. Shortly after returning home, on November 22 he married Sarah Jane Bower Miller and took residence in Franklin County, Pa. He and his family is first listed in the 1880 Perry County census report, and with his wife Sarah J. probably moved from Franklin County to Perry County shortly after marriage. Their first child (George) was born October 1867 in Perry County. Alexander Gaston Mort as remembered by Betty Mumper in a letter to Sally and Carson Mort Oct 4, 1993: As much as I like to know the who of our ancestors and contemporaries, I just love the human interest part of the characters. When we watched "Queen" earlier in the year, I has a real desire to be able to do a mini-series on Alexander Gaston. The poor old fellow would lend himself easily to five or six episodes. I vaguely remember him because he lived with us now and then. I was between three and four when he died. Daddy talked a lot about him in later years. How much he loved flowers and how many grandchildren he and Gr.Grandma raised. How he had little to live on and couldn't get any help. Two of his children were in the Veteran's Orphans School for a time - I guess that was because he just didn't have enough to support the big family he had. |
